Samsung Q70B Review

If you're looking for a Samsung Q70B Review, you probably don’t need the bells and whistles of Samsung’s more esoteric TVs, such as the rotating Sero or the avant-garde Frame. Samsung has innovated throughout all of their appliances. However, the reason that Samsung is so competitive is that they know how to make both quality  high end and mid range appliances, such as TVs.

If you want a mid-range TV that will give you just the immersive entertainment experience you’re looking for, without the extras that can really jack up a TV’s asking price, you can’t go wrong with any Samsung mid-range TV, let alone the Samsung Q70B. That’s our review right there.

By the end of this review, you’ll know whether or not the Samsung Q70B is for you.

What Can I Expect From the Samsung Q70B?

According to our review, this is what you can expect…

Minimalist Design That Works For You

The Samsung Q70B is a TV that has been designed to integrate perfectly into any viewing room. It’s certainly an attractive TV, whether you get the 55”, 65”, 75” or the 85”, being built on the principle that less is more. The Samsung Q70B is a thin TV with an extremely narrow surrounding frame. Not only will the Samsung Q70B fit into the majority of viewing spaces, but you are getting a big screen that isn’t compromised by an oversized frame.

Powerful TV Operating System

The Samsung Q70B is powered by a Tizen operating system that provides extensive Smart TV functionality. The Samsung Q70B’s on-screen appearance is aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate, thanks to its intuitively compact interface design. The result is a smart TV that gives you all of the control you need over your entertainment without confusing you in the process.

The Samsung Q70B also has excellent built-in support for voice control; whether you’re using smart speakers such as Google’s Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa, or you’re using Samsung’s very own voice assistant, known as Bixby.

A Simple Setup Process

This one’s self explanatory. Nobody wants a long setup process standing between them and making the most out of their brand new Smart TV. Luckily, the Samsung Q70B gets you to your favourite entertainment quickly, as it’s easy to set up.

While the lack of a Freeview Play app might make finding the content you want a bit of a hassle, the Samsung Q70B easily connects with various control methods, from voice control to a single TM2280E remote control that’s fairly easy to operate.

Great Image Quality

Because, of course. Why else would you buy a Smart TV if not for its superb picture quality when showcasing your favourite movies, TV shows and video games? The Samsung Q70B features the great image quality you’d expect from a smart TV, but with a bevy of extra features that take it that little step further.

Especially for the low end price that they command, the Samsung Q70B has amazing picture brightness. This quality is maintained even when bright images fill most of the screen. There is no drastic drop in overall brightness as the Samsung Q70B’s brightness takes up most of the screen.

Reduced Glare

Glare is pretty much the sworn enemy of a good entertainment experience. There’s nothing more irritating than sitting down on a sunny day to watch some TV, only to have the centre of the image blown out by a bright light.

The Samsung Q70B can handle HDR glare despite using a side LED lighting system. In case you’re not the kind of person that memorises trivia on the inner workings of smart TVs, Edge LED does not provide the same local lighting control as direct LED backlighting with local dimming. The maximum brightness of the white HDR window, which occupies 10% of the screen, was 580 nits.

Brighter Image Presentation

Lots of TVs fail in this area. They might have a high resolution, but a lack of image brightness severely diminishes their quality. This is one of the areas where the Samsung Q70B stands out, as it’s renowned for its brightness capabilities as a mid-range TV.

This brightness in the Samsung Q70B is achieved both in the preset image settings Dynamic and in Standard. Brightness drops in the more “accurate” Filmmaker and Video mode presets, all of which provide smoother HDR quality. But all these values are pretty decent for a mid-range LCD TV.

Richer Colours

TVs aren’t the only technology to have improved over the course of their existence. Cameras have gained an uncanny ability to reproduce gorgeous, vibrant colour palettes that TVs have been built to preserve per your home viewing experience.

One of the benefits of the Samsung Q70B’s enhanced brightness is that it also comes with heightened colour reproduction. This helps to maintain rich, natural saturation at higher brightness levels than most mid-range LCD TVs. The Samsung Q70B’s brightness is key to a compelling HDR experience, especially since most HDR sources have a wider colour gamut.

Detailed 4K UHD Playback

Remember when 4K was first introduced? The prevailing thought from everybody was “why?”. Then we saw the tech demos. Suddenly, everybody wanted 4K blu rays for their favourite movies. If you’re looking for a proper 4K experience, you want your TV to be able to keep up.

Admittedly, the Samsung Q70B isn’t perfect, but with relatively static native 4K content, the levels of detail in the Samsung Q70B are high. Sharpness is retained quite well when using the Auto setting when there is movement in the frame. Samsung’s AI source upscaling to 4K also pays off, delivering sharper results than most competitors in this class.

Decent Gaming Performance

Many TVs live or die by their ability to provide a high quality gaming experience for consumers. Nobody wants to shell out for the latest next gen console that boasts tech specs on par with the computer on the Starship Enterprise, only to find that their TV struggles to keep up.

The Samsung Q70B TV delivers mostly good gaming performance. After all, the Samsung Q70B supports game enhancing factors such as VRR and 120Hz refresh rate with high definition and consistency. Colours are noticeably richer than other mid-range LCDs. In addition, it takes only 9.5ms to respond to images.

Are There Any Cons for the Samsung Q70B?

Is any TV perfect? It’d be disingenuous to say yes. We want you to find the TV that is perfect for you, so that means acknowledging the areas where the Samsung Q70B might fall just a little short.

Don’t worry. None of these cons are deal breakers, especially for the incredibly reasonable mid tier price point that the Samsung Q70B asks for. They are merely something to consider if you’re looking for a TV to serve a specific purpose, as opposed to being a mid range all rounder.

Gaming Can Get Dicey

Not everyone needs an intense HDR gaming experience every time. If you’re a casual video game dabbler, you’re likely not going to notice any difference at all. However, if you’re more of a hardcore gamer, you might see some notches where the quality dips.

For example, in areas where HDR is really intense, the Samsung Q70B image’s baseline brightness can drop noticeably. This is because the TV tends to adjust to the feel of the extreme lighting range of the picture. This shortcoming can make some HDR games in some episodes not quite high quality.

Side LED Backlighting Can Be a Problem For Darker Footage

This isn’t going to be much of a shock for QLED TV enthusiasts. Nevertheless, you’re still ultimately getting your money’s worth, as the Samsung Q70B still produces a sharper image than its contemporaries, especially for its affordable asking price.

However, that sharpness is affected by the TVs use of side backlighting, particularly when you’re watching darker footage. This is especially noticeable when watching a movie with a wide aspect ratio, which creates black bars at the top and bottom of the image. While this certainly produces impressively deep blacks, the apparent “jump” in brightness as the backlight turns off and then back on can be distracting.

Movie and Filmmaker Modes Have a Small Issue

Playing into the above point; the affected sharpness of the darker image can be somewhat exacerbated by the TV’s built in “Movie” and “Filmmaker” modes, as they deliberately limit the dynamic adjustment of the screen contrast. In all picture presets, the screen tends to turn off the backlight completely during the black fade.

This is another one of those issues where you probably won’t notice unless your enthusiasm towards films has conditioned you to see it. And, that’s perfectly fair. If your film collection consists of everything Criterion has to offer, you should probably consider this part before you make your purchase.

Sound Quality is Nothing to Write Home About

Sound design! It’s a crucial part of an entertainment experience. You can’t immerse an audience if you don’t have good sound.

The Samsung Q70B’s sound… is decent. It does not suffer from distortion or body rattling, even at the loudest volumes. A good movie mix always has plenty of detail and clear dialogue. In spite of the TV's inability to transmit sound forward, the placement of these details is surprisingly unaffected. There isn't any harshness in the treble either, despite the absence of contrapuntal bass.

But, it’s difficult for the speakers to get particularly loud, which can likely be attributed to how thin the TV is. The amplify setting certainly helps with this, but it is somewhat hampered by the TV’s inability to project sound forward. As a result, even the loudest movie soundtracks are projected behind the screen, instead of around your seat, where it should be.

Additionally, the sound tends to narrow rather than expand to another level with really strong and sudden percussive sounds. This is especially noticeable during bass heavy scenes such as action scenes. The excess of bass can be quite immersion-breaking.

The Samsung Q70B offers a decent sound experience for an affordable mid-range TV. However, if you consider yourself an audiophile, and you want your TV to follow suit; either consider investing in a higher end sound system to complement your TV, or slightly raise your budget to accommodate a higher end TV with a more effective sound system.
